Downranking in WoW Forever

Use a cheaper spell rank when it heals enough to keep your target safe. Older ranks can save mana, but Forever reduces their bonus as you level past them.

At level 30 with 200 bonus healing, Healing Wave rank 3 heals 262 to 286 for 80 mana. That is 30.1% more healing per mana than rank 5. The higher rank still heals faster: 176 per second of casting, compared with 110.

Those numbers use client spell data plus a penalty model measured on selected beta heals through level 30. The model has exceptions. Results for higher levels, damage spells and absorbs remain estimates. Compare ranks with your own level and gear.

Choose enough healing for the damage coming in

A cheaper rank can fill a small health gap without wasting mana on overhealing. It can also keep you casting when your remaining mana won't cover the top rank. If incoming damage exceeds what the lower rank heals per second, saving mana is no help: cast a larger heal.

Per-second values count cast time and the global cooldown. They don't simulate a whole fight, movement, regeneration, mana returns or target damage. A rank with the best healing per mana isn't automatically the best one to cast.

Put lower ranks on your bars

  1. Open the spellbook menu beside search and enable Show All Spell Ranks.
  2. Drag the desired rank to an action bar, or use a macro such as /cast Healing Wave(Rank 3).
  3. Recheck the rank when you level or train. A deliberately downranked button stays on that rank as it loses part of its bonus.

Damage spells and cooldowns

Use a high rank when damage per second matters. Low-rank utility can still be useful: Frostbolt rank 1 has a shorter cast and lower mana cost than later ranks, but its slow also lasts less time. An old rank's talent procs may become less reliable, so don't assume a cheap cast gives the same proc chance.

When a large heal is useful, pair it with Nature's Swiftness, Inner Focus or Divine Favor. A free cast or guaranteed critical can be wasted if a small heal was enough. Mana returns also differ: a fixed return favors cheap casts differently from a refund based on the spell's cost, and neither is included in the calculator.

How the measured penalty works

The general model gives a rank its full client coefficient through 17 levels after its learning level. At 18 levels later it keeps 95%, then loses another 5% of the original coefficient per level. At 37 levels later the gear bonus reaches zero. The rank's base heal remains.

Retained share = clamp(1 - (caster level - 17 - learned level) * 0.05, 0, 1)

Estimated amount = base amount + bonus healing * client coefficient * retained share

Talents that increase the whole heal apply after this calculation. The coefficient is separate from the retained share: Rejuvenation rank 1 has an 80% client coefficient and retains 55% of that at level 30, so 200 bonus healing contributes 88 healing over its full duration.

Classic Era and level 60

Classic Era reduces coefficients for ranks learned before level 20 by 3.75% for each level below 20. That reduction depends on the rank's learning level and doesn't keep growing with the caster's level. The calculator's Classic coefficients already include it.

Forever's model predicts a much steeper loss for old ranks. At level 60, a rank learned at level 43 keeps its full coefficient, one learned at 40 keeps 85%, and one learned at 23 keeps none. These are projections, not level-60 measurements. Revisit which ranks you keep when higher-level beta testing confirms or changes the rule.

These are the most mana-efficient known ranks in the beta model, before talents, critical heals and mana returns. Periodic heals count every tick, even if the target wouldn't need all of it. Open a spell in the calculator to compare its size and speed.

What the beta measurements cover

The reported measurements compare how much a spell tooltip gains per point of bonus healing with the spell's full coefficient. They cover selected heals at caster levels 18-30, with 104-240 bonus healing. Rounding accounts for roughly one percentage point, so a larger mismatch needs a separate explanation.

Healing Touch and Holy Light rank 1 are learned at level 1, but their measurements fit the penalty about one level earlier. The calculator uses level zero for their penalty while keeping level 1 as the training requirement. This is an inferred adjustment, not a changed client record.

Healing Wave rank 1 keeps more than the general rule predicts at levels 20-24 and loses about 6-8 percentage points per level. The calculator doesn't invent a replacement curve from five readings. Its rank-1 result remains a flagged formula estimate and shouldn't be treated as a measured value.

The exact 5% rule isn't an official formula. Blizzard's beta development notes confirm that old ranks lose bonus and trigger class effects less often, but don't give the numerical proc curve. No proc-rate estimate is included here. Testing damage, absorbs, higher levels and additional heals may reveal other exceptions.

Use yourself or a player of your level when comparing tooltips with actual healing. Different-level party targets have produced lower heals in beta reports, and that target-level behavior isn't modeled. Critical heals, talents and partial periodic effects also need to be held constant for a useful comparison.
